Falsifiability of the Big Bang Theory Essay
In one of Karl Raimund Popperââ¬â¢s works, he discussed the demarcation that differentiate the sciences from the non-sciences or those that are merely subjects of faith and pseudo-sciences. Popper believes that sciences are falsifiable. If something can be falsified it can be considered as a science. He argued that unlike the work of Einstein which is ââ¬Å"capable of conflicting with possible, or conceivable, observationsâ⬠, the works of Freud, Marx and Adler proves every event as compatible to their theories which in Popperââ¬â¢s argument was not scientific. No matter what the situation is, Freud, Marx and Adler would explain it in terms of their theory which is somehow a subjective way of explaining or looking into things. For instance, a selfish capitalist could be analyzed as someone who was fixated to a certain Freudian psychosexual stage or was suffering from Adlerââ¬â¢s concept of inferiority. Marx would analyze the man from a class-struggle perspective. Popper believes that although there are evidences and observable facts that could prove the three theories through experimentation, these experiments are not falsifiable and are therefore merely based on faith and subjective judgments. In the case of the Big Bang theory, it argues that the universe is expanding. The theory stated that the universe had started from an initial bang or explosion of a very dense material. The impact of the explosion, according to the theory, is still observable today. Evidences shows that the space was expanding as quasars and galaxies are perceived to shift in their perceivable wavelengths. Hubble assumed, with respect to his observations, that either the universe is moving away from a center were an explosion had originated or that the universe was in constant expansion. Unlike the three theories mentioned above, the Big Bang theory left space for debate and possible changes. The three previous theories would always hold true in past and future circumstances and would always have an explanation about the phenomena that they are concerned with (personality or human nature). On the other hand, the Big Bang theory may be false whenever a new discovery proves that a Big Bang had not occurred. Big Bang theory passed the falsifiable criterion set by Popper. Popeyes vs Kentucky Fried Chicken Essay
Popeyes: To be the worldââ¬â¢s best quick service restaurant. Being the best means providing outstanding quality service, cleanliness, and value, so that makes every customer in every restaurant smile. SWOT Analysis: Strengths: The strength of Popeyes is based on its distinctive brand and style of Louisiana spicy chickens that it provides on its menu along with its chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, fried shrimps and other seafood, jambalaya, red beans and rice and other regional items. Popeyes is a highly differentiated brand with passion for its New Orleans heritage n flavorful authentic foods. Weakness: Popeyes is second to its sister company KFC. About 90% of their domestic restaurants are concentrated in Tennessee and Louisiana. Most of their restaurants are located in heavily populated African-American neighborhoods; giving them higher chances of being robbed and giving them a higher close-out outlook. Opportunities: Popeyes serves the food that the world craves and is continuing to expand its global reach. Popeyes operates and franchises 1,977 restaurants in 45 states and 26 foreign countries and out of the 1,977 restaurants 1,542 of them are domestic franchise restaurants and 397 of them are international franchises. Approximately 55% of the international franchises are located in South Korea, Canada and Turkey. Threats: Most of Popeyesââ¬â¢ locations can be founded in urban neighborhoods. The local competition on neighborhood fried chicken restaurant offer lower price to Popeyesââ¬â¢ corporate pricing. There are poor customer base in certain areas and natural disasters. The SWOT analysis for the future of Popeyes looks to be great. Due to more consumer wanting the taste and feel of ââ¬Å"southern hospitalityâ⬠style food, many franchises are starting to pop up in many neighborhoods across America and internationally. When it comes to the marketing aspect of Popeyes, the company markets itself to a non-southern resident base that has always wanted to experience the idea of ââ¬Å"southern hospitalityâ⬠. Popeyes goes with the idea of being ââ¬Å"Louisiana Fresh and Bonafide Fried Chickenâ⬠. With its combination of southern spices, herbs and regional foods on its menu; Popeyes brings the flavors of Louisiana to your taste buds. The advantage that Popeyes have over their competition is that they cater to a more diverse and international customer base. They offer and have both domestic and international franchising if an individual domestic or foreign wanted to franchise a Popeyes location. Their international franchising extends as far as South Korea. It is owned and operated by Yum Brands; the same company that owns and operate KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. One distinct advantage is that all Popeyes franchises do not share the same building as you see a Pizza Hut and a Taco Bell or a KFC and a Taco Bell. One major improvement that I feel Popeyes should improve upon is its domestic in minority based neighborhood for the safety of its employees and monetary losses and its minority base advertisement concept. They should appeal to all neighborhoods and advertise to the appeasement of all. Popeyes sells chicken so their ââ¬Å"target marketâ⬠is anybody who likes chicken. So to make it more sensible, their target markets are young, single individuals, married couples and families and older citizens who do not time at home to be in the kitchen at all times. Their age group goes as low as five and as high as 65. You can now see Popeyes in all sort of neighborhoods: Black, White, Hispanic and Asians just to name a few. If you ever work in a Popeyes, you will see the diversity of the people who like fried chicken. The opportunity for growth in this target market is great. Because as the current market ages, they are still going to be consumers of the same products as they have been and will encourage those that they bring along to be consumer of the same products as well. One obstacle they should be concerned about as a company on the rise is ââ¬Å"disinterestâ⬠due to the lack of creativity if they do not become more imaginative and creative. As a human, the mind gets boring after doing and having the same thing over and over. They should also be concerned of a stiffer competition market from their competitors. Everybody wants to be the number one brand that is preferred but it is the company who is always thinking ahead and calculating risk and rewards to be the preferred brand that stays the preferred brand. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC): The Kentucky Fred Chicken mission statement is ââ¬Å"To sell fast food in a fast, friendly environment that appeal to pride conscious, health minded consumersâ⬠. Vision Statement: Food, Fun & Festival, this is what KFC is all about. Leading the market since its inception, KFC provides the ultimate chicken meals for a Chicken Loving Nation. Be it Colonel Sanders secret original Recipe Chicken or Hot & Spicy Version, every bite brings YUM on our face. At KFC we can proudly say, ââ¬Å"We Do Chicken rightâ⬠. SWOT Analysis:à Strengths: Kentucky Fried Chicken is a very famous chain of quick-service chicken restaurant that started from Louisville, Kentucky. The company is became a sub-brand of Yum Brands in the year 2002 and benefitted greatly from the position and brand value of Yum foods. In the past, KFC chain of restaurants grew at a very fast pace and has become today one of the largest chicken restaurants chain in the world. KFC has been known to be an innovator in the chicken restaurant segment with an annual sale of more than a billion dollars. The KFC as a brand is well established in the dining out as well as delivery service provider in the fast food industry. Despite the entrance and presence of many competitors in the fast food industry the company was able to retain its large loyal customer base because of its unique offering. Due to this reason the KFC ranks highest when it comes to chicken restaurant chains, convenience restaurants and variety food provider. KFC currently has more than fifty percent of the market share in fast food industry and the new competitions are finding it very difficult to capture any of its share. Over the years KFC has gained great recognition as a reputable brand for fast food even after the death of Col. Sanders and has globally positioned itself well in the industry. Weaknesses: When other companies in the chicken industry were trying to increase its market share; KFC were not able to compete well in the market or retain its customers. Also the special paper buckets that is now used by the KFC for delivering large sized orders was originally introduced by Wendyââ¬â¢s restaurant. The company has entered so many markets in the past in the United States that its growth rate was about only one percent a year. KFC has said not to pay attention to its resource and development. Opportunities: KFC has been trying to enter new markets and position itself in some of the hard to enter markets like South America. With more investments; the company can definitely make its position stronger in the food industry. More spending on the resources and development as well as introducing new food items and products KFC can increase its market share and profits. Threats: The competitors of KFC have successfully captured a large market share. According to findings McDonalds has about 35 percent of the share in Sandwich Segment whereas the Burger King owns about sixteen percent of the market share in fast food industry. The local restaurants in different countries where KFC has presence pose a threat to the company. The baby boomers formed the major part of the loyal customers of the company that now have ages between 35 to 50 years and are likely to move towards healthier foods. The other competitors in the industry are continuously improving and trying to enter new markets and increase their market share and sales. With the lifestyle of people changing due to growing awareness about healthier food people now look for something healthy, low calories and delicious at the same time. KFC as a company is doing well in its global positions and how it is the number one preferred brand in the ââ¬Å"quick-service chickenâ⬠restaurant industry. KFC and more accurately, owners of KFC, Yum! Brands Inc. is the foreign company with the largest presence in China. KFC dominates the fast food market in China and is well over twice as large as McDonaldââ¬â¢s there. KFC implemented a better strategy than McDonaldââ¬â¢s in China. While McDonaldââ¬â¢s tried to stay true to their menu and kept their product offering in China somewhat similar to what the rest of the world knows (burgers and fries); KFC incorporated local dishes with their famous fried chicken. They also looked more to local employees to make big decisions instead of just taking their instructions from the U. S. headquarters. This allowed KFC to enter the hearts, minds and stomachs of more Chinese people. KFC have many advantages over their competitors in terms of production, innovation, and ways of appealing to the satisfaction of their target market. Since its introduction into the American way of life, KFC has managed to always keep its original startups but yet adding new favorable additions to suit the needs of each generation. KFC provides a quick and easy meal. It can also be bought in large amounts. KFC can improve on its customer service at certain locations. Even though its mostly a franchising based company but yet the franchisee should take it upon themselves to train better and better equip their franchises to hand the demands of their negative aspects of their stores. The interesting area for growth with KFC is in its international markets. If KFC can take the same approach that it took when it franchised in China, the results will be more international investments from different individuals who see the opportunity as a way to invest in something new. With being the number one international ââ¬Å"quick-service chickenâ⬠restaurant, there can instances where language barrier can play a factor in transitioning into the newer markets. And also they should be concerned with the pricing they implement in those new markets that they explore as well.

Are Gap Years a Good Idea? Essay
When you think about graduating high school, it is almost ingrained in your brain that college is the next step. You think, ââ¬Å"Who doesnââ¬â¢t have a college degree?â⬠And where in life am I going to get without one. But school is not for everybody. A lot of kids, including me, just go to college because it seems like the right path. Kids who have no idea what they want to do, think ââ¬Å"well a college degree could be useful,â⬠well why would you want to go do something, when you have no idea why youââ¬â¢re even doing it. Well, there may be another option. There is a British tradition, which is called a gap year. Defined by Cambridge Dictionaries Online as ââ¬Å"a year between leaving school and starting university which is usually spent travelling or workingâ⬠(Cambridge University 1). Now this sounds interesting, doesnââ¬â¢t it? What if you had a whole year to do what you needed, travel or work, something to help you figure out what you really want to do with your life. In Britain, there is now this option. With this idea in your head a question comes to mind, should the U.S. adopt the British tradition of students taking a gap year? In the paragraphs below, I will tell you why I think the U.S. should. I have looked at both sides of whether or not the U.S. should adopt this British tradition. I have found though, that it is working tremendously for the UK. That is the main reason I think that the U.S. should use this idea, if it is working so great for the UK and their colleges have a better reputation maybe we should also think about adopting this idea. I think students should take a gap year for many other reasons also though, which have to do with the student. First and foremost, it offers a great worldly experience and gives students time to do what they need to do. It also gives those students who have no clue what they would like to major in or do after college, time. Time is what many students need, being rushed into college right after high school and having to do college applications during senior year really stresses some students out. Me being one of these students, last year when applying to colleges, I had to write that I was undecided. And here we are midway through my first semester of college, and I am still undecided and have absolutely no clue what I want to do. And I feel like a lot of students are in the unspoken situation I was in. Maybe if gap years were a more widely accepted idea and promoted then students who didnââ¬â¢t quite know what to do would have another option. Anybody can do gap years also! It is not just used for young students. Older people going back to school, have this option also. And no matter the money situation there are so many options, so no matter what if you wanted to travel you could. There are student travel abroad programs, volunteer and scholarship options. No matter if you have money or not, you can get a great worldly experience that will give you time and extra skills which most students will not have in college. Many people think taking a year off of school is dangerou s. Not dangerous in a physical way, but mentally. An opinion of many who are asked about gap years is that students will not return to school once they have had the freedom of no school for a year. It is believed that students will become mentally lazy, and will not want to work again and realize that they really do not have to go back. But in researching this, I have found that kids who take gap years to do progressive things have loved their decisions and come back ready to learn again. On the infamous website planetgapyears.com, many students tell about their experiences with gap years and how it really helped them become motivated again. Even though people think kids will not go back to school, I think itââ¬â¢s better for someone to take a break then go to college when they are not ready. Studies show that ââ¬Å"the dropout rate for incoming college freshman is almost 30%â⬠(NCES 1). Most freshmen who are not equipped to handle college yet or who are not ready, but do it anyways, just end up dropping out. A Student dropping out provides lower statistics for good colleges, not because the college is doing a bad job but because kids just are not ready. Why should a person go to college when they are just not ready for it? If the dropout rate is high why not let a student defer their application until they are ready? This is how the British gap year works, a student applies to colleges their senior year of high school, like a normal fall applicant would. Once accepted, the student then defers their application and the university gives them an amount of time off. When this time is over, they start in the next semester. Most British colleges offer this to students, and a lot of colleges actually encourage it to students who think they are not ready to handle the college life. I think the U.S. should do this to, only because it is working so well in Britain. The gap ye ar is proven to be a helpful and great experience for students. If it wasnââ¬â¢t why would universities encourage it? Students come back from these trips or years off with a new found want to learn and a refreshed mind. After going to school for four year, it is definitely hard to be excited to do the same thing for another four years. But with a gap year, youââ¬â¢re doing something else for a year, so when you come back you are in learning mode. Another argument someone who is against gap years may make is that they are expensive, especially if you are looking to travel. This is completely wrong though! Travelling is only one option, you can choose to just live at home and work, or focus on something else! You do not have to spend money to take a gap year. But there is always that option too! Many students want to take a gap year, but have no savings or money to do so. No problem! British universities offer thousands of travelling options, such as scholarships, and study abroad programs. Scholarships can help you get started and make it mu ch cheaper. And study abroad programs are too, they help students get more for their money. And the study abroad option also helps them still be a part of the university they would like to attend! So youââ¬â¢re not fully out of school, youââ¬â¢re just off the main campus for a little while. Also there are volunteer options, where you can spend a little bit of your time volunteering but get to go somewhere for free or for a small fee! So there are many options for students who are not well off with money, which we know in this economy is a lot of us, so why not do it? You must wonder truly how popular gap years are in the UK. Well I found statistics on a website called gapadvice.org. A non-biased website towards gap years, this website is geared towards students who are looking to take gap years. It gives basic statistics and even research on gap years into how helpful and beneficial they are for students. According to UCAS Figures, the ââ¬Ëstudents take a gap yearââ¬â¢ rate per year is about 7%, and has stayed close to around 7% since 2002 until around 2011. But this year had a surprising, 37% reduction rate in the amount of students taking a gap year. You may ask why this year had a reduction rate. Nobody is really sure why, but a study called ââ¬Å"Revision of Gap Year Provisionâ⬠report commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills could only talk good things about gap years. This report was carried out by Dr. Andrew Jones from Birkbeck, University of London, to talk about if he thought gap years were hurting or beneficial to students. All he says in this report is that it is beneficial to students to take gap years, finding that ââ¬Å"Planned and well-structured gap years are a highly beneficial experience for young people. They are often important factors in facilitating the next step in education or employment. Participants gain a wide range of life skills and other more specialized skills. These skills are often the ones employers identify as lacking in new recruits and are valued by universities. Gap year participation also benefits wider society both in terms of the activities young people undertake and the wider impact of facilitating the integration of young people into society as functioning citizensâ⬠(Jones 1). This is amazing. A professional does a study and finds only good things about students taking gap years. He also found that in the UK ââ¬Å"between 200,000 and 250,000 young people aged 16-25 are estimated to take a gap year of some kind each yearâ⬠(Jones 1). This number is huge and has only gone up since the earlier 2000ââ¬â¢s. I think with only good things to say about gap years, what is the hurt in taking one? So Iââ¬â¢m sure most students think, whatââ¬â¢s the point? But if you really think about it, everyone has somewhere they would like to travel to eventually. So take this time to travel there. Almost every student story I read online from a studentââ¬â¢s perspective, said that taking the gap year was one of the smartest things they have ever done. And on top of that, that it was one of the best experiences of their life. Iââ¬â¢m sure as soon as you would mention taking a year off of school to your parents, is as soon as you would jump off a bridge, this is the same for me. My parents believe college is a necessity and would give me some crazy look if I had even mentioned taking a year off of school last year. But I do regret not even mentioning it. As of now, itââ¬â¢s taking me some time to get used to college. I have adapted pretty well, but I definitely think a student like me who has no idea what they want to major in or do outside of college, a gap year would have been a good learning experience for me. I didnââ¬â¢t have a chance to do this, but you do. With so many programs you barely have to pay any money to experience a whole new culture and part of the world. You can experience hands on activity and travel at the same time with volunteering. And you could even stay home, but donââ¬â¢t be lazy, take an internship, get a job, do something productive. It gives you time and options to think about what you would like to do when you grow up, and gives you time to set a financial ground for yourself before going into college. Students come back with worldly experiences and things many people have never seen before, which gives them a leg up in college. If there is only good to say about it, then why not?

Using Roof Shingle for Asphalt Pavement Research Paper
Using Roof Shingle for Asphalt Pavement - Research Paper Example In addition it contains between 32% and 42% of a coating filler such as limestone followed by some 28% to 42% of granules. The remaining portion of asphalt shingles is composed of fiberglass, cotton rags, paper and adhesives (Carter, 2008). The use of asphalt is pervasive throughout shingle manufacturing and asphalt constitutes a major part of shingles. The large amount of asphalt present in roofing shingles make these shingles suitable for recycling applications such as for constructing roads. It is estimated that the United States alone manufactures around 12.5 billion square feet of asphalt shingles in a single year (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturer's Association, 2012). In recent years there has been a renewed emphasis to recycle asphalt shingles for road based applications since the shingles contain a large amount of asphalt that can be reused. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that around 11 million tons of waste is created each year from asphalt shingles in the United States. This waste is comprised of around one million tons of scrap generated by various asphalt shingle manufacturers while around ten million tons of waste is generated from construction sites (Environmental Protection Agency, 2005). This indicates that asphalt shingle supply can be considered as a reliable source for use in road construction given its continuous supply. Another notable aspect is that asphalt shingles and their related waste comprises around 8% of building related waste. Also, asphalt shingles represent around 10% of the waste created from demolition debris. Recycling one ton of asphalt shingles is estimated to conserve one barrel of crude oil (Owens Corning, 2011). Asphalt shingles can be recycled for use in a number of different road based applications including aggregate for road construction, creating pavements, to control dust content on gravel roads etc. It is typical to use asphalt shingles to form the hot aggregate mixture used for manufacturing and paving roads. The amount of asphalt shingles is kept constant at 5% in the aggregate mixture for desirable properties. It has been researched that increasing the amount of asphalt shingles to 7.5% in the aggregate mixtures renders the mixture soft and compromises pavement performance. In addition, using asphalt shingles from construction projects may also result in brittle pavements that might crack especially at low temperatures. For this reason asphalt shingles are typically used where stone mastic asphalt mixtures are required (Newcomb, Stroup-Gardiner, Weikle, & Drescher, 1993). Waste asphalt shingles are recycled by shredding them to half an inch size for batch plants and shredding them to a quarter inch size for continuous feed plants. These materials are added to the overall aggregate mixture before the virgin asphalt is added for binding. The waste shingles that are typically used for creating HMA contain hard asphalt. The combination of this hard asphalt and the soft virgin aspha lt tend to provide highly desirable properties to the overall aggregate mixture. Generally the resulting mixture of waste hard asphalt and soft virgin asphalt provides better stability as well as better resistance to rutting which make it desirable for use in pavements. The departments of transport of a number of states have approved the use of asphalt shingles for constructing roads and pavements. Asphalt shingles have mostly been approved for use in hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. While the use of asphal
STATUTORY VALUATION - Compulsory Purchase (REAL ESTATE BSc COURSE) (2) Essay
STATUTORY VALUATION - Compulsory Purchase (REAL ESTATE BSc COURSE) (2) - Essay Example However, we acknowledge that the adoption of compulsory purchase law will come with the right for people whose property interests may be affected by the claim compensation. Given that the shop was let to the Smiths Minimarket; the first floor leased out for 125 years; and the advert hoarding at the ground floor let out at an annual license, the freeholders are justified to receive à £ 334,800 compensation. From the available records, the shop was let to Smiths Minimarket on an FRI basis for 15 years from 25.12.2011 at a cost of à £ 20,000 per year though subject to a rent review every 3 years. It is evidence the shop`s first floor flat was leased out for 125 years from 25.12.2008 for a rent of à £ 200 per year. It is also well-known that portion of the shop, particularly at ground floor, had an advert hoarding let at à £ 5,000 per year though on annual license. We learnt that the planning consent was not renewed, actually from the time it was given for 3 years, years ago. Moreover, the freeholder receives à £ 50 every Friday evening from Mrs. Jones who has a chip and fish van that occupy the shop from the side of forecourt. It is said this agreement was held on a license that was stated to run for two years. In addition to all these, the freeholder revealed that à £ 100 is paid per sale by Mr Youens for casual sale of second-hand cars that occupy the three places on front forecou rt of the shop. A good number of compulsory purchases are made under laws granted by several general Acts. The Government had walked the talk of its early intention to complement the existing laws by fresh laws which dictates that authorization of compulsory acquisition is given through compulsory purchase order that is created by the acquiring body and affirmed by the appropriate Minister or confirming authority. This order should be in prescribed form and comprises a statement of purpose for which property is

Critique of Vita Wallaces' essay Give Children the Vote
Critique of Vita Wallaces' Give Children the Vote - Essay Example However, these rights, if not controlled especially to those less than 18 years would eventually be misunderstood turning to be a liability to the society. In her essay, Wallace believes that children under the age of 18 years have the right to vote (Eschholz et. al. 315). To her, the account of age should not be a stumbling block. In her article, she presents her views on the significance of educating children and giving every child the right to vote. Wallace says that in passing the law against child labor and provision for compulsory schooling, the involved, which she refers to as well-meaning people aimed at protecting every child from any form of exploitation. She believes that the decision about schooling I personal. According to her, no punishment should be given in case children choose not to attend school. Rather, she asserts that at whatever age suitable for children to vote, the right should be given. She says, ââ¬Å"What I suggest is that children be allowed to grow into their own right to vote at whatever rate suits them individuallyâ⬠(315). The word individually helps eliminate the aspect of generalization. Accordi ng to her, age limit would hinder capable children from voting. It is from this assertion that Wallace believes that children should have the right to vote. The common believe that if given the chance to vote children will vote in favor of their parents, in effect giving more votes to the parents should, according to Wallace, not be the case (316). Although many of the readers of this article consider Wallace argument thoughtful, I disagree with her point of view. In the entire essay, she presents her opinion. However, the major claim of this assertion could appear as fact or a judgment (Cooper 5). This shows how he overlooks the Toulminââ¬â¢s theory of argument (Cooper 3). As an activist, she uses an interesting approach, which convinces many readers. Despite her powerful approach, I consider her unsuccessful. Her major claim,
